Update From Devon's Dad: 6-23-06 (Last Morning Update)

Devon rested on Thursday. He is being treated for Pneumonia and as always the medical personnel are staying on top of if not in front of the curve anticipating what Devon's next needs will be. He did have range of motion PT workout with his arms and legs yesterday, and was in a very restful state most of the day. Early this morning (Friday) I took the Lee Greenwood CD "America" in and he seemed to enjoy listening to the great patriotic songs of this country as Mr. Greenwood does them.

Thank you all so much for the cards, letters and Email, Devon is seeing well now, and he has a pair of glasses for reading that was made for him so he really enjoys seeing all the support to him and his fellow servicemen and women.

You Know, we are all FAMILY.

Mel, Bonnie and "the boys".

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-21-06

Hello everyone,

Today was much better than yesterday and that is always a good thing. He had everyone pretty worried and we stayed with him throughout the day and most of the night. Now he is running a fever again and they have done cultures and started him on 3 antibiotics until they are able to pin point what the exact problem is. His breathing seems labored and congested. The abdominal bleeding seems to have stopped, for the most part. They put him up in a chair for 4 hours and stretched out his arms at the same time. He was glad to be able to sit upright and seemed pretty comfortable, as much as possible in his condition. He was enjoying some music and sleeping off and on as well as visiting with us.

Adam is here until tomorrow, we will really miss him, especially Jacob. I am so grateful for the sustaining power of prayers. Whenever Devon is worried or hurting he asks us to say a prayer for him and it really seems to calm him and help him deal with things. Yesterday after things quieted down I was talking to him about FAITH and HOPE in the healing power of Jesus Christ. I told him that I had been praying and I really felt in my heart that he is going to make it through this and that he has a lot of good things he needs to do for the Lord. I asked him if he had prayed and he said, "yes," so I asked him if Heavenly Father told him he was going to make it through this and he said, "yes". I am so grateful that Devon knows the Lord is blessing and helping him and that he still has much to do in this life. I am so thankful to my Heavenly Father for preserving his life and for giving us hope for the future.

Gratefully,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-20-06

After starting the day out fairly "normal", for Devon he caused quite a bit of work for his nurses and some of the other medical staff in the ICU. Some bleeding that did not want to stop around his abdomen. But with the knowledge, equipment and supplies available to the staff it was controlled after a while. We appreciate their letting Bonnie and I stay in with him during care. Devon had that "I'm not sure I like what I'm seeing look" in his eyes when he comprehended there were about 5 or 6 medical staff around his bed. Even though he had a large amount of pain medication, an amount that usually puts him to sleep, he fought to stay awake until things were fixed and everyone left but his nurses. I know he received 3 units of blood yesterday, maybe 4, along with several accompanying blood items.

Our good Bishop here responded to a call quickly and we administered to Devon, which he was aware of and voiced "Amen" to. I so appreciate one of his nurses especially. When I asked Devon if he would like a Priesthood Blessing, she responded, "yes, I think we need a blessing here". How can medical care get any better? Some of the best in the world, and based with Faith by those ministering the care. It may seem odd, us asking Devon about things first, but our rule is, always ask Devon first, we may go ahead and do some things, but he will always be asked first. Even the medical staff here, while they do not always ask, because there are many things that have to be done, always inform and explain to Devon what is about to take place.

Devon rested the rest of the evening, saying and doing very little. This morning he is off the blood pressure medications that help give him blood pressure, breathing well, and talking very softly to me. Maybe today we can all get some rest and work on getting strength back.

I saw a picture in the paper this morning with one of the Miami Heat players with their hands folded looking Heavenward. I truly appreciate our service men and women that dedicate themselves and sacrifice so much, along with their families, so we can live in a country that continues to function "normally".

Thank you all for your prayers and support. God Bless all of you, and a special prayer and blessing to our service men and women that are recovering from injuries, you are very special to us and in our prayers constantly.

Mel, Bonnie, and Family.

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-19-06

Devon has had a taxing day today. When wound-vac's are changed during wound care it is always a lot of work, for the medical staff and for Devon. He had to have almost twice the normal pain medication during the tilt table therapy, and now tonight he is bleeding again near his bowel wound and needed more pain medication during dressing changes and attempts to stop the bleeding. It has slowed greatly.

Oldest brother Ryan left at 4:30 PM from his bed side for the airport and with Devon on all the pain meds didn't get much interaction today, but last Saturday was a good day for them. Adam is there now with Bonnie, Devon loves having his brothers near, they are such a great support for him and I can now truly see the depth of their love for each other. (Ryan, good-bye and I love you, I didn't get a chance to tell you that this afternoon with what was going on with Devon.)

Thank you all for the support again, (including the Dream Catcher, it will be outside his room), I know your time is precious, I cannot find the adequate words to express my love and appreciation to you all for your prayers, cards, E-mails and sacrifices to your families, and especially those made for your warrior sons and daughters. (Terry, we miss you here at Fisher house)

Our Love and Respect to all of you,

Mel, Bonnie and Family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-18-06

Happy Father's Day to all you dads. Mel got the best Father's Day gift, when he went to see Devon at 5:00 this morning the first thing Devon said was "Happy Fathers Day". He actually remembered from the day before, the nurse said she had not reminded him. Mel was pretty excited when he came and told us. The 'San Antonio Express News' did a front page article about Devon and Mel for Father's Day, Click Here. It was pretty well done, they even got Jacob to be in a picture.

Adam arrived tonight and Devon was very excited to see him. Devon has had a rather quiet day, he slept a lot after wound care and has been awake off and on most of the evening. He watched the basketball game with his dad at the hospital and was disappointed that Dallas lost. While I was visiting he wanted me to sign for him, "Devon loves God". We do sign language with Jacob and for some reason Devon thought that was important to do, maybe because he thinks of Jacob as being close to the Lord. It is nice that he is so eager to pray and hear us read scriptures to him. I know the Lord is watching over him and that there are angels attending to him all the time. There is a very peaceful feeling in his room.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-17-06

Hello,

This morning started out well. Devon was asking the nurse when his new prosthetic legs would be ready. She told him it will take awhile and he said for them to 'get the show on the road' because he was ready to get up and out of there. She told him he had a few things that needed to heal first. Then there was another dip in the rollercoaster ride and Devon had a tough day but he is sleeping soundly tonight.

It's kind of complicated but to simplify it, he has some uncontrolled bleeding in a tough spot on his abdomen so they decide not to put him on the tilt table today. He was in quite a bit of pain during wound care so ended up being pretty heavily medicated. His blood pressure is a bit too high and his heart rate is lower than usual. They had to call his doctor to come in twice today.

We waited most of the day to see him for one reason or another, but it was sure worth the wait. When he looks at us and smiles it just melts our hearts. He gave Mel a kiss tonight before he left. He was a little worried about the burned side of his face so we are going to see if we can take a mirror in and show him how great he looks.

He wanted Mel and Ryan to give him a blessing tonight and that seemed to settle him down. Even though we have faith that the Lord has a plan for Devon it is always hard to see him struggling for his life but it does remind us of the severity of his condition and the need to continue our prayer vigils, which we thank you all for.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-16-06

Devon was very excited today because his oldest brother, Ryan, came to visit. The nurses said he was very anxious all morning and was looking for him and didn't want them to give him too much for pain because he didn't want to fall asleep. He is doing great today, with the exception of his bowels, but that will heal when the time is right with the Lord. He is keeping us busy as he wants someone with him constantly and is fighting sleep, afraid we will leave. When we see his eyes start to nod we tell him to close them and we will sit there until he wakes up. He makes us promise and then he will dose off for awhile.

He is really enjoying the emails and cards. We usually take a couple at a time to read and today he said, "Bring a lot of letters, not just one or two." His eyes really lit up when we told him how many we have been getting, many from when he was not very conscious. Every time I go over one of the nurses will have a humorous story about something he said. He is quite a character and very quick witted, especially considering he is usually pretty medicated.

The nurses who took care of him early on are dropping by to say "HI" because word is getting around that he is talking now. He looks at them like, "Who are you?" so I explained to him how we know them. The medical staff here do so much more that just take care of a patient. It is obvious they really care for them. We are so thankful for them and pray daily for Heavenly Father to guide their care of all their patients. Monday they will be doing a full upright tilt and he said he is kind of nervous about that and asked if I would say a prayer with him that he would do well.

I know every parent thinks their children are amazing and I have always had the utmost respect for all of my sons, but I have to say Devon's positive attitude, determined spirit and sense of humor have me awe-struck. I truly underestimated his true fiber, he is one strong individual and I can feel the sustaining hand of the Lord when I am with him. "With God, nothing is impossible." is more than a nice phrase, it is a living reality in Devon's life. We are so thankful for each day we have with Devon and we know Heavenly Father protected him for a reason bigger than just our family wanting him to be here.

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-15-06

Today was a very busy day for our guy; first the tilt table, then a shower, (a very special kind of shower room, and a very special method of showering, with a bar in the shower to hang all the bags for the IV's.) It was an education having it explained to me about the stainless cart with a pad and how the shower procedure was to go. While in the shower, Devon's blood pressure went VERY LOW. Bonnie and I were not there. It really caused his nurses some anxiety, (they almost called us) but with their professional knowledge and the rest of the medical staff being there, a recovery was made. Bonnie and I conversed with him later in the afternoon, but he did a lot of sleeping after that until about 5 PM.

Devon also has another infection in his blood and is being treated very aggressively for it. At 6 PM an NCO accompanied me into his room. As I mentioned before, that really helps Devon, talking Army talk to some one who is not ancient (Dad) and was in the country he was in. Devon even said a prayer for him so he could stay at BAMC working with and for these soldiers instead of going to Ft. Riley, Kansas. All the prayers being said for him are softening his heart also and with some coaching, especially from Mom, Devon is realizing it's important for him to talk to the Lord and ask Heavenly Father for Devine help in this healing process, especially with the holes in his bowels.

Devon is always very grateful for the care he is getting but he is also very assertive about how he thinks things should go. They get quite a chuckle out of him telling them when he is through, that 'they are done' or 'they need to leave the room' and when possible they respect his wishes. They keep telling us that they like the feisty ones. The letters of support to Devon are so inspirational, that is when he smiles the most. He loves hearing from people he knows, as well as those that he doesn't know personally. We are able to feel the love and support as we read the letters to him, and it really seems that Devon feels all the power of prayer being sent to him. We sure do and we know that it is the power of prayer that is helping us through each day.

Thank you all,

Mel, Bonnie & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-14-06

I guess I forgot to mention that Devon had the stitches taken out of his eye lid on Saturday. The eye Dr came in today and said the infection is cleared up. They will continue to keep them lubricated and watch them closely. Devon did well on the tilt table today. He was at 45% for 20 minutes and tolerated it very well. It tired him out and he slept the rest of the afternoon. He was finally awake this evening and we had a nice visit with him until about 10:45. He wanted us to stay until he fell asleep. He has been enjoying watching the games on TV and they move his bed so he can see the television.

They will probably be doing some more skin grafting next week, if he continues healing. All of his numbers on the monitor are looking great and his face is almost completely healed. We thank the Lord for the many small steps, but he still has such a long way to go. We have faith that Heavenly Father will continue to carry him through.

Big Update From Devon's Mom: 6-13-06

Today was a huge leap for Devon. They put him on some temporary prosthetic legs and put him on the tilt table. This is important so that his bones will feel the effects of gravity and stop softening and deteriorating. He did fantastic!! Moving to the table and the stretching they did prior to the move were rather painful so they gave him some pain meds and he actually slept through most of it. When he first felt the pressure on his legs he said it was painful but that it was a good sort of pain.

Devon has been in the bed for over 2 months now. They put him at a 15% tilt for 5 minutes, then a 30% tilt for 5 minutes and he did so well they put him at 45% for 15 minutes. It was great to see him in a mostly upright position.

For the last few days he has been more and more aware and totally interacting with us when he is awake. He is only periodically confused and he is wanting to know everything from the nurses about his condition. He is taking it remarkably well and his great attitude and sense of humor are already showing. The nurses are getting quite a kick out of him. They told him he has his own website and he said "Shut-up!" Which in teenage-ease translates to "Go on, you are kidding me." He is already winking at them and giving them his famous sideways smile. He is truly unbelievable, he knows everything that has happened to him and he is being so brave about it all.

He is still considered critical, especially with the fistulas in his bowel, and he still has a lot of skin grafting to be done. That has really slowed down waiting for the holes to heal, but he is doing well in many areas and we are so thankful to Heavenly Father, even for the small miracles in his life. We have talked to him a lot about the importance of having Faith and Hope in Jesus Christ and about praying for the Lord to heal him.

We have told him about how many people are praying for him and he gets the sweetest smile. Last night Mel and I went over and told him we were there to have Family Home Evening with him, which we have had all his life and we have always begun by everyone saying in a happy voice, "I'm happy to be here!" When we said that to him his face lit up like a candle and he got the biggest grin. He wasn't quite able to say he was happy to be here, given his condition but we told him we are sure happy he is still here with us.

Devon's brother, Andrew, was here over the weekend and it was great for him to really be able to talk with Devon. Andrew is not too comfortable with the whole hospital experience but a few times when he was with Devon they had to do certain procedures and Devon asked him to stay in with him. I know Andrew was way out of his comfort zone but he was willing to be there to support Devon and help talk him through the pain. Andrew commented that he doesn't think anything will ever shock him again.

He is really enjoying hearing all the emails and cards so we are re-reading the ones from earlier, when he was not understanding much, as well as the new ones. He is even reading some of them himself when we hold them up for him. We are so grateful to the Lord and to everyone who cares for and prays for Devon and for all the love and support we have received.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-11-06

Hi All,

Devon was put on the new bed about 2 am and slept soundly for about 3 hours. It is a new air bed that inflates and deflates to move different body parts to improve circulation and healing. It doesn't rotate, which is good because since he has been more alert he has let us know he didn't like the rotation. They can also adjust the temperature on the bed so when he was cold today they warmed up the bed. It is so nice that he is able to talk to us but he gets a little frustrated when we don't understand what he is saying. We still need to explain to him periodically where he is and what happened. For some reason he thought he was having surgery today and when I asked if he wanted me to read to him he said, "After surgery." He is not able to have anything by mouth so it gets dry and he said he wanted orange juice so I asked if he wanted me to swab his mouth with a lemon glycerin stick he yelled at me, "No, I hate lemon." I told him not to get sassy with me or I would ground him. He is doing well in some areas but the fistulas still drain periodically. We are still praying fervently that they will heal soon. We thank the Lord often that he is still with us and we continue to see Heavenly Fathers hand in his healing and the care he is receiving.

There was an hour long special on Channel WOAI (4) local news on the San Antonio and Iraq connection. Devon was one of the wounded soldiers featured as well as the Dr that worked on Devon in Iraq and brought him safely to BAMC. It was done very well and was most informative and inspiring to see the level of commitment the medical staff has over there and here. I have put a link to the news station, if it works.

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-10-06

Devon has been sleeping most of the day. He has been complaining of back pain, which is not unexpected considering he has been lying on his back for 2 months now. The bed that he is in helps, with it's side to side motion, but a different type has been ordered for him that may be in tonight, hopefully, or tomorrow.

Devon was measured for prosthetics yesterday, basic ones that will allow him to be put on a tilt table that will move him gradually to a vertical position. This will help him out and let his body know that gravity still exists. He has been on some pretty special mattresses lately. While Devon was being measured for the prosthetics, the people that were measuring and will be building them, and I were explaining what and why the measuring was necessary, he accepted the need for them to be built, and understands, and this is important, not what was lost, but how much he has yet to work and live with. As we mentioned, he is talking well, if slowly with the ventilator removed and the valve in the trach, that helps Devon being able to communicate.

We continue to recognize all the blessings that Devon and all of us are receiving and are humbled by the knowledge of how much the Lord is caring for Devon, and all the other service men and women that are being prayed for. What a great effort by all, It is very revealing seeing all the love poured forth, from the Lord, and all of you.

Mel, Bonnie, and family.

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-9-06

Devon has been more alert the past two days so we have been spending more time with him. The donor sites are not ready yet so there has been no grafting this week. The fistula's really need to heal up so feeding through his stomach can take place which is the most efficient for the healing process.

Devon was very alert this morning, he completed watching the video of his friends back home and some sites of Port Orchard and Puget Sound Naval shipyard taken from Andrew's boss and good friends deck. After Devon watched the second half, he wanted it rerun and we watched it again, it's good for him to see his friends, what true friends they are and they just want him back home with them. The Calvary Stetson was a huge bright spot for Devon on Wednesday, Thank-You fellow soldiers of Devon's for that, it was a great help, and thank-you First Sergeant for saying, "Scouts-Out" as you were leaving. Yesterday, Thursday, we received in the mail two ships coins and a picture of the Nimitz, signed by the Project Management and the Commanding Officer. When I held the picture up, Devon forced air past the Trachea Collar and said, "go Navy". His eyes grew very wide, he had the largest smile on his face, and you could tell he is proud to be a part of the entire US Military Team, fighting to maintain ours and others freedoms.

Devon is still involved in a race with time and a fight against infections, he is certainly doing his part, I am amazed at his strength and determination. Thank you all for the prayers and support you are giving to Devon and our family. Our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ knows each one of us individually, and very well, even perfectly. I pray for blessings on all of our Military, those working to keep our military strong with support, and especially for the families of those men and women who are in harms way. You all are Freedom Warriors also. Our Love to all of you.

Mel, Bonnie and family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-7-06

We have some good news about Devon's day. He is doing very well and the drainage from his fistula has slowed down considerably. They took him off the ventilator, he is now breathing on his own with the trachea collar. That is where they have oxygen going to the area of his trachea but all the breathing is done on his own. Also, he used to be on 14 different IV tubes and now he only has 5 lines going into him. He is looking good and wakes up and tries to communicate. When Mel went to see him at 5 am Devon woke up and asked, "What are you doing here?" He is always confused about where he is and he probably thought Mel was in Iraq. It is so encouraging to see him making positive progress.

His 1st Sergeant came from Ft Hood today and gave Devon a real Calvary Stetson with the combat knots in the braid and he got promoted to PFC. He was very alert when they were here and he was excited about the Stetson and the promotion. He has been totally alert several times since yesterday and when we were talking to him tonight it was so wonderful to know that he was following along with what we were telling him and responding with head shakes and facial expressions. Mel asked him if he wanted a blessing and he shook his head yes. Later when we were leaving we asked if he wanted me to say a good night prayer and sing him a song he shook his head yes. I can't explain the joy it is just to see the look of recognition in his eye and to know that he understood what we were saying.

This Saturday it will be 8 weeks since he got here and in all that time he has never been as aware as he is now. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to my Father in Heaven for bringing Devon along this far. I know it is only His Grace and Mercy that is strengthening and healing Devon. I believe the Lord is guiding the Doctors & Nurses that are caring for him and I am so grateful for them. Again, our thanks goes out to so many of you who are sending encouraging notes and inspirational books for us to read to him and the wonderful quilts, but especially to each one who takes time to pray for Devon. You are all helping him to heal with your faith. Words are just inadequate to express how I feel right now.

Thank you all,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-6-06

Devon is having a quiet day but things are slightly looking up. After wound care he mostly slept hard the rest of the day. They were able to put wound vacs on his legs this morning, they wanted to do that on Friday but he wasn't well enough for them then. They hope to get his legs ready for more epicells, providing the wound vacs work as they should. The idea is they draw the body fluids to the surface to stimulate the healing process. He has had one on his right arm for quite awhile. They also changed out his respiratory lines and put him on a c-pap, which means he is breathing on his own with the machine to take over in case his breathing stops. His lungs are staying clear and they are strong. I am so grateful because many burn victims have damage to their lungs. There has been no real change to his fistulas but the epicells they put on previously are doing well. His fever continues to go up at night so they are changing one of his medications, as it could possibly be the cause. Unfortunately, it is the one that keeps him from having flashbacks so this may be a long night. We know that as we all continue to ask the Lord to heal Devon, it will happen when the time is right. The words 'long suffering' keep coming to mind and that is just what we need to be, continuing to have faith and hope in the healing power of Jesus Christ.

Thankfully,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-5-06

Hi Everyone,

Things are going pretty much the same, there are no real physical changes, no new developments. We are mostly just spending time with Devon, talking and praying. We started reading the scriptures with him, we're not sure if he is following but he does open his eye and seems to be looking at us. He was pretty awake and alert for about three hours today and wanted us to stay with him during that time. He has tried to talk a few times, asking what happened or wanting to go home.

His eye infection is healing and he will only need his right eye stitched for a few more days. They're mostly just giving him great care and waiting for the holes in his bowel to heal. He is constantly being monitored, he keeps several people busy most of the time. We need to remember that he will be healed in the Lord's time, I'm sure patience is something we need to learn. I am just grateful for every day that Devon is with us and I feel the strength that comes from so many people praying for us. I know I could not do this without the strength given to us by our Heavenly Father.

Thank you all again,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Dad: 6-3-06

Devon is certainly doing his best to keep life interesting here.  After yesterday and the Artery issue, and it was/is amazing how fast his recovery was, I know it was because of the level of medical care given to him and the Lord certainly having an active part.  I know that the prayers and thoughts raised in Devon's and the other Warriors behalf here are strengthening them, families, and the medical personnel here.  Yesterday morning I had a distinct thought and image come to mind of the Prayer Warriors there in the Kitsap area and elsewhere sending their faith through prayer to Father.  There must have been a group of them up very early yesterday.

Today another fistula appeared in Devon's bowel.  Tonight there was seepage from both.  It's a little above the other one.  But on the positive side, his eye is receiving great care and during a phone conversation with the Dr. it seems that the small infection is being contained and will be removed with the medication he is receiving for it.  I really appreciate the Dr. and her update to us, and the VERY comprehensive care she is giving him.
When I was leaving Devon a little after 7PM tonight, one of the last things I said was that I was going over to watch Jacob so Mom could come over and visit him with her good friend that is here for a few days.  Devon shook his head YES about 4 or 5 times!  That was so touching to see because it was the most self-movement I've seen for a few days, he understood what I said, and the love he has for his mother brought tears to my eyes, which made me move away from his bed so they wouldn't fall on him.  What a complete MAN Devon is.

I'm sending this off now in case Bonnie is too tired to add a update, this has been "quite" a day.  I'll be going back over when Mom returns, then we both get to say goodnight.  Thank you all for the support for Devon all those in the Armed Services of the United States.  I love to see manifestations of support for our Troops, in all branches of the Service.

Mel, Bonnie, and Family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-2-06

This morning it started real early, Mel had just gotten to the hospital around 5 am and was walking in to see Devon when the alarms started going off and the trauma Dr was being paged. They told Mel he would have to wait to see Devon because an artery had just ruptured in his left arm. It was where they had taken some of the muscle that was burned and that has consequently weakened the artery. They were able to sew it closed but he lost several units of blood. I think they have given him either 5 or 6 units today. The artery will remain closed but they assured us he will do fine with the one remaining artery. It must have been slightly leaking because yesterday we noticed that his pointer finger had turned black and they thought it was from the blood pressure medicine but now it has almost returned to it's natural color. When Mel got in to see him around 8:00 his skin had a jaundiced look to it but by tonight his color had come back and he seemed very alert and following our conversation.

He was trying to talk to us and after a few failed attempts to understand him it seemed like he was asking what happened so we again explained to him where he is and why he is here and that we are here in Texas with him. He seemed fine with that and he relaxed and listened to us. The Dr. had planned to put wound vacs on both of his legs today but with the loss of blood they put it off for awhile. They want to do that to get him ready for more epicells. We are still in the race to get him covered with skin as soon as possible because of infections.

We know the Lord was watching over Devon this morning as the nurse was right there with him and acted quickly and skillfully to save his life. Every day is a miracle with him and he really is healing quickly in many ways and Our Heavenly Father will take care of the difficult ones in His own time and in His own way. His face is almost completely healed and his skin grafts are doing great.

Update From Devon's Mom: 6-1-06

Hello,

Today we spent a lot of time waiting to see Devon, for various reasons. First, wound care took a little longer, then they were changing out his central lines, and this evening they were removing the old central line and his nurse had to do direct pressure for quite awhile. While she was doing that quite a bit leaked out of his bowel and then she had to do quite a lot of dressing change. Kathi and I were in the anteroom during that and as I watched her working on him I was so grateful for such a skilled nurse who performs such thorough but tender care on my son. Prior to that his bowel leakage was very minimal and we're pretty sure it only leaked tonight because of the pressure to the area.

Devon was pretty alert when Mel was with him and then we went over and said good-night and sang to him. That always relaxes him and then he starts dosing off, which is good. His temperature was up a bit tonight, 39.3 c, so they gave him Tylenol and put ice on him in various spots. We told him about Jacob deciding he is going to take Devon and fly home to see his dog and kitty and Devon seemed to be understanding. He really loves Jacob and I'm sure can't wait to be able to see him. We always tell him how hard he is working and that we are proud of him and that there are many people praying that the Lord will heal him. I just feel at peace when I tell him that and I really believe it is true. Thank you all so much, it is truly wonderful to experience how many loving and caring people there are with so much faith in the Lord answering prayers.

Some Interesting and Serious Facts about Devon's Condition

(by Dan Bligh, Devon's Proud Uncle)

I just had to put some things down after talking at length with Bonnie and Mel today, (Devon's mom and dad). With a situation like Devon's, (very rare due to the extreme nature and number of injuries,) you tend to only deal with, (process, share, etc.) the present "hurdle or hurdles" at the time, and most of the updates posted reflect that tendency. I picked up some interesting things today which I would like to share.

Devon's epicell skin grafts are 1/10,000 of an inch thick, (any of you amazing health care professionals working on Devon feel free to correct us if we have any of this wrong). Because of this, he has no natural "insulation" and so they need to keep his room temperature at or above 85 F, and then they boost it to 100 F or higher if he gets cold.

The amounts and costs of healthcare technology, specialized medical knowledge, medical instruments, specialists time and facility use being dedicated to Devon are astronomical, (most of you would truly not believe it), and we applaud, and are forever grateful to the US Army for their superb care of our wounded soldiers, (especially Devon). It is a fact that Devon would not have made it this far without the "best care" right from the beginning, and all the way through to today.

Devon has three major trauma's he is battling, (any one of which on it's own is life threatening). The doctors are very frank with the family about how serious Devon's condition is, and say that, (while they are amazed at his progress in light of his serious injuries), he is far from out of the woods. But the family is equally convinced that God is a worker of miracles...and that he has brought him this far, (a miracle in itself) and therefore can bring him all the way.

His surgeons, (of which most of the Army's top burn surgeons are at BAMC) are working on Devon's situation with other top surgeons from around the country, pooling their efforts and knowledge to find the best ways to go forward with Devon's many challenges. Let us continue to pray and trust, and hope with the family for Devon's recovery. Keep the letters and cards and gifts coming. They are appreciated.

Update from Devon's Mom: 5-31-06 PM

Hi Everyone,

We had an opportunity to talk to Devon's Doctor today and another complication has arisen. He said it is like Devon is suspended in space and gravity is not able to have an impact on his bones so they are starting to soften or dissolve. They started him on some more medications which should help but the real cure would be if they could start putting him vertical or sitting up and moving around. The problem there is his blast fracture in his lower back still has shards that are penetrating the spinal column and if they penetrate the cord it will cause problems with his bowel & bladder. In a week they will know if the meds are working and possibly take the chance to start moving him. On the upbeat, since this morning there has been a considerable decline in the amount of leakage from his bowel and we are giving thanks to the Lord for this healing and praying for it to continue.

While talking to the Dr, he said there is not any real past experiences in dealing with someone with so many serious complications as Devon has, because in the past wars they did not have the knowledge or technology to even get them to a hospital in the States. There have been others with more burned area but not the severity and the complications of the amputations and the broken back. It truly is a miracle that Devon is still with us but I truly believe the Lord has a plan for Devon and he is here for a reason. I feel in my heart that he will make it, even against all these odds, I know if Heavenly Father wants him to pull through it will happen.

Earlier today he was mostly asleep but when we visited Devon tonight he was following us with his eye and even peaking out of the one that is stitched half way. He seemed to enjoy our talking with him and praying and our singing. We stayed until he was falling asleep. Mel and I were able to go over together because my friend Kathi Flores came down to help us with Jacob for awhile. His temperature was up a little but they like it a little high and their metabolism to be fast for the healing process. They are taking such good care of Devon and they spare no expense in his care. He is monitored so closely and any little change is noted and acted upon. I am amazed at the proficiency of the nursing staff and the Doctors are truly the best in their field and we daily thank God for them. Thank you again for all of your prayers, please know they are appreciated and we know the Lord answers prayers. We hope you will all continue to ask the Lord to heal Devon, he still has such a long way to go.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-31-06 AM

Hi there all,

Thanks Aaron for the Email to Devon. The ones from the people he really knows he tries to follow along with his eye. Devon is continuing to fight very hard and with great determination. I had an opportunity to be instructed and counseled by one of the physicians here. I appreciate his honesty and informing us of the reality of Devon's situation and the many huge battles he is engaged in. I certainly don't have the medical knowledge to go into details, but Devon has 3 traumas going on, and each one by itself is life threatening. The initial Dr. we talked to here certainly had it right when he said this is a marathon, that will last a long time. A new really good friend that we have met here and has gone through what we are going through said it's like a continual roller coaster, ups and downs all the time.

Devon's temperature is starting to go up again tonight, there is a delicate balancing act with blood pressure medications to maintain satisfactory blood pressure, and today he received a couple stitches in his right eye lids due to an irritation and possible infection with his eye because he has not been blinking with it. This will allow lubricant and medication to be applied and his eye to remain moist. The optimologist (spelling.....eye doctor) is from Mead Wa., near where I grew up so it was a break talking to Devon about the Spokane area as she was working on his eye. The fistula in his bowel is being monitored very carefully, as is all that is going on with him.

A General from 4th Infantry Div. visited him and left a 4th ID coin/medal for him. I put it in a baggie, took it in and read it to him as I held it in front of Devon's eye, Devon is still a proud Soldier of the United States and that was evident by the spark that came to his eye and the small head nod. I am so proud of his strength and determination. He was getting tired so I left him and will be back by his side at 0500, I left him with a "SCOUTS OUT", got another head movement, and squeezed his hand. (When Bonnie was with Devon before it was my turn to go over he answered Bonnie with a nod when she asked him if his lips were dry and moved his arms some.)

I have great respect for these warriors, their parents, and Devon's brothers, the other warrior brothers and sisters and loved ones, I know there are other centers where our injured are healing. Here and at the other places, the loved ones receive a great deal of strength from each other as we are all caring for our soldiers.

Our Thanks and Love to all of You

Mel, Bonnie and Family

Update from Devon's Mom: Memorial Day, 2006

It's been a quiet Memorial Day for Devon.

He has been pretty sedated when we have been with him today but we told him of all those who send their love and prayers to him. Ryan & Lindsey both had to leave but it was great having them. Devon has had some really awake times lately and even though he doesn't really talk he enjoys having someone there talking with him and sort of moans if you say you are leaving, so we have tried to keep overlapping vigils with him during those times. It's usually late at night because they sedate him more when they are working on him during the day and we can't be in there then. This afternoon I noticed his right eye looked infected so asked them to call the Dr. He came and they started him on some antibiotic eye drops. His temperature came back down and all his vital signs are good. Another day closer to getting better and going home. Last night Mel showed him some home movies and when he saw our yard and house and family & friends tears came out of his eyes.

We really enjoyed all the Memorial Day poems and letters. This has always been an important day to us but now it has taken on new meaning. We would like to add our thanks to all who serve this great country throughout the world, our deepest respect and gratitude to all who have given their lives for the cause of freedom, and our love and prayers to our wounded soldiers. We know there are many others in similar condition as Devon, we have met many families here and know there are many more who bear the scars of fighting for our freedom. The price is high but the cause is just. I believe the Lord has a special love for those who forget themselves to serve others. I know He is watching over Devon and all of our injured soldiers and the families of those who have fallen.

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-28-06

There was a lot of work going on with Devon today, nothing not out of the ordinary for him and the medical staff caring for him, but anywhere else, the work would be EXTRAORDINARY. A day does not go by that I give thanks to the Lord for the medical knowledge he has placed on the earth at this particular time. And for the people caring for Devon, their desire to serve others in the field they have chosen and the work they have put into studying, and maintaining cutting edge knowledge.

Devon was moved to the room adjacent to the one he was in, and we were able to set up the video that his friends and I made. He was very tired tonight, but responded initially with tears, Mom was right there talking to him and he just settled back and listened to the voices on the TV. This tape will be good for him, especially Diane's and Lindsey's rap song they made up. We'll be making more.

He made it through another day, readings all within expected ranges, so I am assured and I have complete trust in those caring for Devon. Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts, This is a great weekend for remembering those that contributed to our freedom and have paid up to the ultimate sacrifice. I salute and honor them, along with all you members of the armed services serving now. You have my greatest respect.

Mel, Bonnie and Family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-27-06 PM

Just a quick update on Devon. He was very alert today and responded when we spoke to him by making faces or moving his head. He didn't really speak but it was obvious he was following what we said. All of his vital signs and temp are good and his face and head are healing amazingly fast He seems to be pretty aware of his situation and we talked to him a lot about having hope in the healing power of the Lord. We are praying for a miracle in the healing of the bowel and we are fasting tomorrow (Sunday) especially for that. We know the Lord can heal it and we have seen His healing hand in our lives many times. We know you will all be adding your prayers also and we really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Uncle: 5-27-06

I just talked with Mel, (Devon's Dad), and Devon is facing another specific challenge right now which the Doctors are concentrating on. He has a hole, (fistula) in the wall of his lower intestine, (maybe because it was weakened due to prolonged exposure to the air, and/or a bacteria) and they need to get it closed. They tried applying collagen, (our bodies natural glue) while Mel, Bonnie and Ryan were in the room if you can imagine that, (Devon's mom, dad and brother) and it did not work. They will now have to stop feeding him through the tube for a little while and try again, (still giving him intravenous nutrients, etc.) They are asking for as much prayer this weekend as they can get for Devon. Devon needs another miracle right now, for this specific challenge. This seems to be a pretty big concern by all accounts.

On the up side, Devon's close friend, (Lindsey) is coming down to visit today, and the family is excited as Devon reacted very well the last time she was there, encouraging him. Mel feels it is not a coincidence that she is coming down at this particular time when Devon is facing this hurdle. I agree.

Thanks to all who support Devon and his family in this time of their need. May God richly bless you.

Dan Bligh, (Proud Uncle of Devon Gibbons)

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-26-06

Hello,

We had the opportunity to talk to the burn surgeon that was in Iraq and treated Devon within 20 minutes of the explosion and stayed with him on the trip through Germany and to Texas. He is an amazing person and it was interesting to hear some of the things that transpired early on in Devon's treatment. He was checking Devon today and found a fistula in his bowl. It is very small, about the size of a small needle but it was oozing fluid. While we were in visiting Devon the Dr came in and took a small glue gun looking tool and sort of glued the hole closed. It wasn't really glue, it was something bodies produce to heal but he said if it works that is great, if not they will try something else. He said it is a very disappointing development with the potential to be very serious. It is extremely important that what he did today works. We are going to have a special fast this Sunday and would like to invite anyone to join us.

Today all of his vital signs are good and his temperature is staying down. He has been making a moaning sound and we aren't sure if he is unhappy or just found out he can make this noise and it is something to do. I'm sure his nurse will be glad when he falls asleep tonight. We pray the Lord's healing power will continue to bless Devon through each new development and especially that his bowl will be healed. Also, that Devon will feel the peace and hope that can only come through the power of God. Each day that Devon makes it through increases his chance of survival. A friend said that to me today and it gave me comfort.

She has many challenges in her life right now and we have been able to talk and share. Everyone is so nice here but generally they are here because of a tragedy that has occurred and it really changes your perspective on what is important in life. I hope everyone who reads this will take time to enjoy your loved ones and find a way to help lift someone's burden. We had a group of ladies come and bring us dinner one day and they all had on shirts that said, "We are the hands and feet of the Savior." I really like that thought.

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-26-06

I picked up big brother Ryan at the airport at 23:45 last night, (Thank you Bethany for sharing him) Devon REALLY likes having his brothers around. We stopped in to see him and he was fairly alert following his CT scan, looking at us very clear eyed and he even looked at me and said," give me your wallet". I've got to ask his friends if there is an inside joke there, he has asked me for money plenty of times before but never for my whole wallet. His temperature was down last night, then up, then down. This morning at 0500 it was fairly normal at 37.8 C. He had a pretty good night, and we hope it continues through the weekend. He is a determined soldier, and thanks to the Army leadership that visits him from Ft. Hood, he knows what his mission is now.........to get better. Our Humble Gratitude for the prayers, thoughts, and help that we are receiving from everyone. Devon and the other warriors here are ongoing miracles everyday. What an inspiration they are to us.

Mel, Bonnie, and family.

Added Notes from a phone call with Mel: Devon had the CT scan to make sure there were no other injuries they did not know about, as they are going to begin a pretty aggressive physical therapy program on him. It seems this is a good sign.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-25-06 (Night)

Last night was a long one. Devon ran a high fever most of the night (40.9 c) and it was triggering flashbacks. When I went in and told him I was there he yelled, "MOM!" loud & clear, then he told me he loves me. His nurse was working so hard, putting ice packs and cool cloths on him, everything possible to bring it down. Mel and Bishop Coupwood gave Devon a blessing about 10:30 and his fever came down some and he settled down shortly after 11:00 so we left to get some rest but Mel was back by 4:00 am, he couldn't sleep. His temperature dropped during wound care this morning, then climbed to 40.2 c. They worked on him most of the morning changing lines and his allograph on his abdomen, among other things. They took him down for a CT scan tonight so I had to leave but I just called and his temp is 39.4 c so it looks like the antibiotics are finally working. They did the CT scan to see how his back is doing, because he had a blast fracture but haven't been able to do anything more than take precautions while moving him because the more critical issues took precedence. They want to start sitting him up and moving him more. They are very progressive in their care here and they get them moving along as soon as possible. I'm sure Devon will give them heck when they try to move him but they like the feisty ones. They say they are the ones that make it through these tough injuries, so I told them they'll 'LOVE' Devon! I can feel the Lord watching over and blessing Devon and it gives me a feeling of peace and I can feel heavenly Father strengthening and supporting us, which we know is an answer to so many prayers. We are so grateful to know we are not alone in this trial.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-24-06 (Night)

A quick update tonight. Devon's temperature is still above 40 deg. C. (105.6 F.) as was expected. It is worrisome to us, and is a concern, but not a crisis for him. When I went to see him at 8pm I called into his room, "hey Devon, Dad's here to see you."" As clear as a bell he called loudly out, "HELP DAD." I went in, his eyes were bright, he was in some pain that the nurse took care of quickly but mostly I put him at ease as he was having a clear moment through the pain medication and didn't understand where he was and what all that stuff was for hanging off his IV trees and the tubes running to him. We spent some time explaining to him what they were for, that he is healing well and that he has great people caring for him and that Mom and I are never far away. It was good to see understanding in his eyes, clear speech, and his eyes following our movements. It lasted only a short while though until his pain medication kicked in, (about 3 min) Or as he puts it, "Good Stuff."

Love, Mel, Bonnie and Family.

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-24-06 Afternoon

Hi All,

Today has been, well, today. Devon had a rough night, keeping the medical staff busy and especially his primary care nurse. She should have been paid triple time for the work and care given to Devon last night. Early this morning his temp was 40.4 C. and went up to 40.7 C. when I left just prior to their shift change. Speaking with his Dr. later in the morning, from the blood culture and lab test results he is on an antibiotic now that should take care of this infection, this time. It'll take 24 to 36 hrs though. When I left mid afternoon his temp was still quite high and much work was being done to lower it. His Dr. did say that the grafts were still looking good, they are taking for the most part and the Epicell grafts that were cultured and grown are looking good. Actually able to see the cells now by looking at them so they are growing. That is on his chest and front part of his thighs.

What great news that is. But while all that is going on it is still possible to see the answers to prayers happening on Devon's face and head. The healing process is.....a miracle happening daily. Thank you for your Faith, Prayers, Thoughts, Jokes, and cuddly stuffed animals that have a message on them and make us cry the message is so special. We are truly humbled by the magnitude of the love that is being shown to Devon and our family by everyone.

The contributions to Devon and our family are especially appreciated, and we recognize the sacrifices being made. The abundance of Charity, the True Love of Christ, that we witness and see manifested is a tremendous source of strength to Devon, and all of us. Included in our prayers are Devon's fellow heroes that have sacrificed, and those who are currently serving to protect people throughout the world, we recognize their service. Thank you for the support.

Speaking of support, the soldiers from Ft. Hood, Enlisted, NCO, and Officers that come to BAMC and support their fellow soldiers... I don't think they know how much help they are to those recovering and the families. The United States Military takes care of of their men and women. There is nothing left to want. Their value is priceless in the recovery of these heroes. Our Love and Thanks go out to All.

Mel, Bonnie and family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-23-06

Devon has run a pretty high fever today, again. They started him on different antibiotics so hopefully it will come down soon. His blood pressure dropped and they had to give him meds for that. They are really on top of all of his problems and he is having excellent care. He was really quite alert today and seemed to be following everything we were saying to him. Mel was there when he had physical therapy and he was able to move all of his extremities. I showed him some pictures and cards and told him again how many people love him and are praying for him. We are trying to take more cards to read to him as he is awake a lot more often. There are so many with such sweet and loving messages and classes of school children that have written to him. He hasn't been talking much lately but his expressions show that he understands and is touched by the love and concern shown to him. His temperature was coming down some when I went to say goodnight to him and I stayed until he was asleep. Thank you all again for the love and support, he is still so very fragile and we can not express how much we need all the prayers to continue. We know the Lord hears and answers prayers and that Devon is being watched over by our Father in Heaven.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Uncle: 5-22-06

I just had a talk with Mel today and the news is very hopeful. He will have a new and encouraging update this afternoon for us. He did say Devon was as alert as he has ever seen him on the way to surgery, and he was very encouraged. (Scroll Down for Mel's Update).

We want to rejoice for these small, (but very important) daily successes of Devon with the family. Thank you all for your continuing support and input. It is very encouraging to everyone, and because of your amazing letters and prayers and words of encouragement, (a true form of therapy for Devon), the BAMC is going to look into setting up similar sites for the other wounded Heroes in their facility as a therapy program.

I have put a new link to a "How You Can Help Page" at the suggestion of a close friend of Bonnie's, and it should answer most questions you may have about how you can help, at this point. As with all families in these crisis times, they can use all the help they can get. May God richly bless you for your heart felt care and concern for Devon and his family. Keep up the prayers and letters. They are a so important for many of us who are part of this family, (and I mean "the family" of all who support Devon, his immediate family, and all the wounded Warriors and their families).

Thanks again, Dan Bligh (Proud Uncle of a True Warrior and Hero)

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-22-06

Hello All,

Devon was fairly strong this morning with good readings for all the vital things so instead of having surgery tomorrow they decided to move it up a day. The Dr.'s were pleased with what was accomplished. Skin was grafted onto his abdomen to close up the incision and wounds there. Donor sites were from his head (top and back) and shoulders. This covered about 10% of his wound area and with closing the incision that will help out with several issues that he has been contending with for the past month. They are still pleased with the previous grafts and how they are taking. As of about 5 PM this afternoon, (our time) his temperature was good, blood pressure strong, breathing OK, and when I walked in and said, "hey Devon, here's Dad", he opened his eyes and turned his head right to the side that I was on. That was amazing to me considering the surgery he went through today. Physical Therapy was in moving his arms and legs, this afternoon while I was there. The key is not what was lost, but how much was able to be saved and they are working very hard to ensure their continued use is available to Devon.

We continue to give thanks and recognize the blessings our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ are bestowing upon Devon. All of your Prayers and Thoughts for Devon and his fellow wounded are so appreciated. You all are a source of strength for us, and I know for Devon also through this healing process. We are quick to remind ourselves that we are still in a day to day mode, We thank Father for each moment we have that Devon continues to gain strength and know that all the blessings we are realizing com through Him. Bonnie will probably update more later, she is so much better at this than I. Thank you all for the support, Closing up his abdomen will cut down on his loss of fluid greatly, and also stop a potential source of infection. This was a huge step today.

Our Love and Thanks to you all.....Mel, Bonnie and Family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-19-06

I never did like roller coasters and when they told me this recovery process would be like a roller coaster I remember thinking just that, now I am sure I shall never ride another one. Earlier today I met with Devon?s doctor and he had just left Devon and was telling me he is having a good day and everything looked good when they did the wound care and that he is planning to do a lot of skin grafting next week and he plans to close Devon?s abdomen up then, also. That was very encouraging news and I guess the uphill part of the ride. Then Devon started to shiver while they had his dressings open and now he is running a high fever again. It is not a huge problem, the nurse sent off cultures and they will know in a day or two what is causing it. It happens frequently but it is always hard for me to see him like that. I talked with SGT Paau?s wife as I was leaving the hospital. He is the one who was wounded in the same attack and came with Devon. He is doing well and was moved from 4 North to 4 East, which means he is doing quite a bit better but she said the same thing still happens to him frequently so I hope I can get used to it. i know this is just a minor dip among so many miracles. After what Devon went through, the fact that his is alive and doing so well fills me with gratitude for all the miracles the Lord continues to send to Devon.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-18-06

Hello Everyone,

Devon's surgery went very well and the Doctor was pleased with how the epicells are taking, as well as the skin grafts. He did an allograph exchange and he said Devon is looking good. They were able to close his abdomen some more and that was all clean. He said in the next week or two he will do another big skin grafting. His Doctor has always been very straight forward with us and so far he has always told us that Devon is in critical condition or they are still in life saving mode, or something like that. He has always been careful not to give false hope. Today when I spoke to him after surgery he told me that he is HOPEFUL about Devon's condition. That may not be a whole lot to go on but it sure made me happy. Adam was able to visit with him and I think Devon is really happy to have him here. His nurse was talking with Devon and she told him he had been here a few weeks and he said, weeks? She didn't tell him it is five weeks.

I am so grateful to our Heavenly Father to finally see some improvement in his condition, small though it may be. I know the Lord's time is not our time and we can not understand completely what His plan is for Devon but we need to trust in His love and tender mercies to be with him. Again, thank you all for your prayers and love and support. I know I say that almost daily but I mean it every day. It's not just something to say. When we receive the wonderfully uplifting cards and messages it truly lifts our spirits and strengthens us to know so many people care. Thank you all,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-17-06

I am so happy to be able to have good news for you all. Devon is doing a little better tonight. His temperature is staying down and his blood pressure is staying up and he just looks like he feels better. He woke up while I was there and tried to move around some so we explained to him where he is and why the bed is moving and that we are here with him and he is safe. I told him they are taking good care of him and he is healing, that there are many people praying for him to get better so he can go home. I told him that Adam is coming tomorrow and he really opened his eyes wide about that. We said a prayer and I sang a song to him that I sing him every night called, 'Angel Lullaby.' He seemed to relax and it was time for his medication that makes him sleep. First thing tomorrow they will do the surgery to change his allograph and check the epicells and depending on how it is taking they will decide how much more to start growing. It's amazing how much better I feel with just a little improvement. I'm so thankful to have a Heavenly Father who loves us and is watching over all of us. I know His loving arms are around Devon and that gives me peace.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-16-06 at 9:10 PM

Hi All,

Devon has had a rather quiet day. His temperature continues to fluctuate; it goes way down when they are doing wound care because they have to let the epicells get air for about an hour. Then they put him under warming lights and with the infections he has it goes too high, but not as high today as it has been, so there is improvement. His blood pressure is a bit low so they are keeping a close eye on that. They would really like him to get it up without medication. During wound care today there was no evidence of pneumonias on the dressings they took off, which is a huge blessing. I shed tears of gratitude when I heard that. His nurse tonight was so sweet, she said on one hand he has a lot of problems but on the other he has a lot of good things going for him. I know mostly he has our Heavenly Father watching over him and the prayers of so many people and he is young and strong with the heart of a soldier. I can see in his eyes the will to live and that is so important. The Doctor is planning to take him into surgery on Thursday or Friday to clean him good and change the allograph and they are planning on growing more epicells for him as of now. His angels are watching over him tonight. Thank you all for praying so diligently for Devon and for all of our soldiers.

Reply to Dave From Devon's Dad: 5-15-06

Dave,

Thanks for your note of encouragement on Devon's website, and while I do not have the time to reply to everyone, I do want you to know from Bonnie and I that words from strangers never have been, and especially now, are not meaningless. The offers of help, and the words of encouragement, and in particular your reference to American Soldiers from the Revolutionary War to now were very meaningful to us. You are right though, right now there is not much people can do to help, there are a select few in the medical field that are allowed to treat him, the care he is receiving is unbelievable, essentially only immediate family members are allowed into his room and then we are washed and gowned in a particular way to reduce the chances of infection, all we are able to do is add words of encouragement to him as he is fighting this great battle.

But in the future, as we have a knowledge that God can heal Devon, and if it is Gods will that he come home to the NW, one of Devon's favorite things to do is ride the ferry from Bremerton over to Seattle and go to the Seattle Center. We will need help. Actually when he is in the physical Therapy part of his recovery and around home and just learning to move again, we will need lots of help. So when we come to Seattle, I'll hold you to your offer, OK? Thanks for your Email address. I am considering you a friend, as I do all that have the courage to offer heartfelt help. It's because of support and prayers from the many people like yourself that Devon has made it this far and long and continues with a desire to go on. With Gratitude to Our Father in Heaven, and Thanks to you, and all who are helping Devon.

Mel Gibbons

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-15-06 6:45 PM

We got to talk to the Dr's that took the gauze off the epicells today and they said so far it looks like about 80% are taking and that is good. Average is 40% but it is still early in the process. They also said the skin grafts on his upper back are doing very well. They are trying to find out why he continues to have such a high fever. Another bacteria showed up in his blood and tomorrow the culture will be able to tell them what kind it is. They started him on another antibiotic today but they had to stop giving him the meds for the fungus internally because of kidney problems. He is still getting the topical treatment for the fungus. They want to take him for a CT scan but have to wait until he is stable enough for the trip downstairs. They think maybe by midnight he will be able to go. They think there may be pockets of infection internally and they also want to check his lungs for pneumonia.

He is a pretty sick guy today and I was pretty nervous earlier but when I went to see him about 6:00 he seemed to be doing better and his fever was down to 101. Mel is there now and I will go once more before bed to say 'goodnight' to him. Please continue all the prayers for Devon. We know the Lord hears our prayers and the Devon is in His hands and we are so very thankful for all the love and prayers and support of so many people.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-14-06 at 8:48 PM

Devon has been asleep for most of the day today but he did wake up a few times tonight when the nurse was working with his lines and it was bothering him. I told him I love him and he said," I love you, too.? It was a wonderful Mother?s Day present. Mel had signed a card from Devon and that was very sweet. Devon had a fever again tonight and that is such a worry for us. They were working on bringing it down when I left. He seems comfortable on his new bed but sometimes a little concerned, possibly about falling out when it goes to the side. He does sleep much better since they moved him and that is so important. He was breathing mostly on his own with about a 30% assist and if he stops breathing the machine will take over. They have been able to increase his feeding to 60% and hope to go to 80% tomorrow. That is very important for growing new skin. tomorrow the Dr. will begin checking the gauze to see if the epicells are sticking and alive. We will let you know tomorrow.

Thank you all for your love and prayers,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Updates From Devon's Mom, & Dad: 5-13-06

I just left Devon and he is running a pretty high fever, about 105 F. He seemed to be asleep but he did move his eyes a little and seemed to be aware that I was with him. I said a prayer with him and told him again about how many people love him and are praying for him to get better. Mel just left to visit him for awhile. Yesterday they moved him to an air bed. It is very high tech and he seems to be sleeping much better, I think he is more comfortable. The idea is to keep him from having his weight totally on his back so the skin grafts can heal better. There are little compartments on all of his sides and it moves slowly from side to side and allows his weight to shift to different parts of his body while he stays stationary. He is strapped in securely so he won't fall out. It will also rotate head to foot but for now he is only going side to side. His blood pressure and other numbers are doing great but we are really praying for his temperature to go down. His face is healing well and they shaved him today.

Hey there everyone, This is Mel, I just came back, his temp is down to about 102.5 and still going down. His lungs were suctioned while I was there and the fluid is getting clearer, and there is less of it, RT people seem to think that maybe the bed moving from side to side is having a positive effect on his lungs. It tilts to about a 45 degree angle both ways, takes about 5 min to make the cycle so it's not like he is rock and rolling. (but I know he would like to be.) I was able to get enough eye blinks from him to know what to write on Bonnie's Mother's Day Card. It will be short but at least we know what he wants to tell her. (he really loves her is included) His care is top notch tonight like always, and thanks so much to all of you for the prayers and thoughts and cards and E mails. God created the universe and all things contained therein, I know if it is His will and plan, Devon will be home. This is a great Country because of all the Great People that live here.

Mel, Bonnie, and family.

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-12-06

Good Morning and special thanks for your prayers yesterday evening and during the night.

What a rollercoaster day yesterday as Bonnie described. We went from cheerleaders to keep his BP up to talking to him soothingly about everything we could think of to keep him calm and convince Devon that he is safe. This morning His temperature is around 100, which is normal for his condition and how hard Devon is working during the healing and sustaining process. His BP is good and he is calm, eyes are open and just a few head shakes in answer to questions or comments the past few hours, mostly though I was just hanging out with him. I did a lot of talking about places we have been to and were going to go to and hang out which would not be near a hospital!! We did see a small smile on that one. Thank you for the prayers and support, they were very sustaining last night for Devon and all of us and I'm sure for all of you too. We all are a great family supporting these soldiers that are recovering from sacrifices made due to their commitment to Freedom and our American way of life. You troops that read this, all of our love, support and prayers are with you also, remember your training, keep your head in the game, take care of yourselves and your Battle Buddies. This is what I recite to Devon each morning, at a minimum he moves his lips with me and we usually both have tears in our eyes:

THE SOLDIERS CREED:

I am an American Soldier. I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values. I will always place the mission first. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment, and myself. I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat. I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life. I AM AN AMERICAN SOLDIER.

Love to you all...........Mel, Bonnie and family.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-11-06 9:00 PM

I just left Devon and Mel is over with him now. He is having a tough time today and his fever is back up to 105 tonight. He has been pretty sick all day and has had trouble keeping his blood pressure up. They had to give medication for that which meant they had to stop his feeding tube because the meds make his digestion track constrict. It is a cycle that never seems to end. They have to hold back on the pain meds because that drops his blood pressure. When his fever started up he wanted water, which they can't give him so I was wiping his mouth with a damp cloth and putting on moisturizer. He was calling for Adam and we started talking about his brothers, trying to get his mind on good things. We showed him some of the emails and the pictures of the signs around Port Orchard. He read them and seemed pleased. Then he starts hallucinating and thinks he is at war and was telling me to watch my back because they are firing at me. Then he switched over to World of War craft (his favorite computer game) and he asked me what my power was. I asked him what his was and he said super strength and tried to break the ties that hold his arms from knocking all the tubes loose. When I was wiping his mouth he gave me a little smile and made a kiss, which just melted my heart. I just wish there was more I could do, I feel so helpless when he gets like that. This is tough on a Mom who has almost always been able to help my sons through illness and problems. I know I can't fix this one, only the Lord can do that. I know I need to have faith in Heavenly Fathers plan for all of us. Today is a month since the insurgent attack, probably the longest month of my life. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. We will keep you all posted. Thank you for all the cards and messages. The love and prayers are so appreciated and they really lift our spirits, especially on days like this one. This was kind of a hard one to write because I know how many people read about Devon I wish I could always send good news but he is going to have good and bad days. I have made friends with two ladies who have been going through this for nearly two years. One leaves tomorrow and one leaves the end of June. It helps me to be able to talk to them and learn from their experiences. Mel just called and said Devon is finally sleeping. He stayed with him until they figured out how to help Devon. They changed his antibiotic and gave him some different meds and his fever is on the way down. I am so happy to hear that news, now I will try to sleep.

Love to you all, Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Dad: 5-11-06

Good Morning Everyone.

Devon had an amazing evening last night. We held a conversation with him, he teased the nurses, was giving smart-alec answers to questions and most encouraging of all, he let the nurses and RT person know that his lungs needed to be suctioned out, that he felt he wasn't getting enough air. Which is exactly what was needed. So he is correlating his body with the care he is being given. He was concerned with all the IV bags (7 of them) hanging and the lines coming down the pole, that was explained to him very well by the medical staff. He had a fairly restful night, and slept most of the time I was with him this morning. All the support is greatly appreciated, The Emails are a tremendous help to Devon in his mental determination to battle back. His temperature was around 103-104 this morning, that is being worked on and many samples were taken to figure out the cause. He is getting the best possible care. We really love the medical staff here. Bonnie will write more later.

Love and thanks to all...............Mel

Update From Devon's Dad: 5-10-06

Just a quick update this morning. Devon finally had a restful nights sleep. he was sleeping almost the entire time I was with him this morning. All his monitored levels were within the ranges expected by the Dr.'s. He has an infection that is being treated, this was not unexpected and the medical team is right on top of it. His blood is analyzed every 6 hours.

The letter from the "Prayer Warriors" at the Klallam Tribe is uplifting as all the letters are to us and Devon. They are all read to him. But what a fitting title for all that are praying for Devon and his fellow soldiers that are injured, Prayer Warriors.

As Bonnie indicated yesterday, he wouldn't settle down, The Dr's have regular conferences on the people in their care, often you will see a circle of them right outside Devon's or others room. They are using their collective knowledge, which is truly considerable, to figure out the right COMBINATIONS, not just a single treatment, that will work for these soldiers. When Devon wouldn't listen to us and lie still, I went down to the 4th ID liaison office and a Sgt. Maj. came back up with me to let this "soldier" know what was expected of him by the Army. It was done in fun, Devon enjoys seeing fellow soldiers in BDU's visit him, Officers, NCOs and Enlisted. It's good for Devon to be reminded that he is still a warrior and soldier, and I read the Soldiers Creed to him each morning. He truly follows it. Later today I'll write it to you, very inspiring words to live and work by. As Bonnie said, the care is tremendous here, the medical team is inspired and knowledgeable, and yes, Angels here on earth.

Love and Thanks to All..............Mel

Update form Devon's Mom: 5-9-06

Devon had a pretty good day today. They were finally able to figure out what to give him to help him get some rest this afternoon. It appears that because he has such a fast metabolism he needs almost twice as much pain medication and given more frequently than most people. So he should finally get a good night sleep. It is too soon to tell if the new cells will take. The Dr said it will be 5 to 7 days before they will know that. This morning was pretty humorous, I was trying to calm him down and was not having much success for more than a few minutes at a time and after 3 days of this I was pretty exhausted and frustrated and more to myself than to him I made a comment that I totally expected to go over his head. I said," Oh Devon, this is so hard on me," and he looked right at me and said, "ON YOU???" I wanted to chuckle because that is the Devon I know but I explained to him that because I love him so much, it is hard to see him so frustrated and agitated.

Then we talked to him about how much Heavenly Father loves him and how many people are praying for him and reminded him that he needs to be praying also. After we left, his nurse continued the conversation with him about prayer and suggested that he take time to thank the Lord for his blessings and she said he looked at her like she was crazy, as much as to say, 'Look at me, exactly WHAT should I be thankful for?' So she proceeded to remind him that he should be thankful to be alive and for a family and friends who love him so much and will stick by him. Angels come in all shapes and sizes and I think this nurse is one of them, in fact, all of these Nurses and Doctors are angels in my book.

Devon is one of the strongest and bravest young people I know and it is an honor to be his mother. The Lord truly has a plan for Devon and is watching over him. Devon's story will be a long and bumpy one but while we rejoice as he makes it over each hurdle we realize there will be many valleys also. David reminded me of this one day when I was a bit shaken when Devon had a setback. May we all have the faith to remember that the Lord is truly in control and continue to ask for His blessings to be with Devon.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-8-06, 7:46 PM PDST

Today Devon's surgery went well. They were actually able to use more donor skin from his head. He heals so fast there, they have already used it 3 times. They placed the cells that have been growing in the lab on his legs and his torso. It's a very expensive procedure and the cells are fragile so he should remain as still as possible, however, those of you who know Devon are aware of how difficult it is for him to lie still. It's very important that as many cells as possible live and grow. The sooner they are able to get his body covered with his own skin the better because until he is covered the chance of infections is so great. Yesterday and today he has a lot of anxiety and he is always trying to get up and asking us to get him out of there, so we are constantly trying to settle him down and explain to him that he is safe and needs to stay in the hospital so they can help him heal. One of the medications they give to him causes mild amnesia. They do not want him to remember what he is going through but that also means that daily we have to explain to him where he is and what is happening and continually reassure him that he is safe in a hospital in Texas and his family is with him. Other than that he came through the surgery well, his temperature is up a little but his blood pressure and his oxygen are good. They will keep him on the vent for the night and then start letting him breathe on his own tomorrow. I keep reassuring him that Heavenly Father loves him and is blessing him so he will heal and that many, many people are praying for him. Thank you again for your prayers, they are truly felt and appreciated.

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-6-06 AM

Devon's surgery yesterday went well but he has been running a pretty high fever (103 to 105) since yesterday afternoon. It was coming down when we were there about 2:30 today. They removed the allograph and any infection or fungus they found and scrubbed him really well, then put on new allograph. It was mostly to get him ready for the big skin graft planned for Monday. They had to take some infected fat from his hip, (I didn't think he had any fat) and some more tissue from the front of his left leg. When Mel asked the Dr if that would affect his being able to walk he said, "Yes, it could but we are still in lifesaving mode for now."

They started physical therapy on him so he doesn't lose his range of motion and this morning Mel was there while they were doing it and when she told Devon to push against her hand he was able to move her hand a ways and he was understanding what she was doing and co-operating with her. That was a good sign to me and he does respond and knows when we are with him. Andrew and David are here this weekend and when Andrew told him he loved him, Devon said, "I love you Andrew." just as clear as I would. He has called for me a few times and he asked to see Adam. When the nurse asked who Adam was he said "My brother."

Again, thank you for all your love and prayers. I hope they will continue for the long haul. We tell him about all the prayers and cards and print off the notes from his website and read them to him. Sometimes he will get a little smile on his face or a tear will come out of the corner of his eyes. We frequently say prayers with him and he has had Priesthood blessings. I know Heavenly Father has a plan for Devon and I feel the Lord's strength and peace when we are with Devon and His sustaining love in our lives. We love you all and are filled with gratitude for your kindnesses.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-6-06 PM

We just came back from seeing Devon and I am so excited. David & I had a really good heart to heart talk with him and earlier Mel & I talked with him for almost an hour. (well he mostly nodded yes or no but he did say a few words). He told David he loves him and asked for Jacob. He said to tell Jacob he loves him and best of all he said he wants to get well!!! He knows it will be hard but he wants to live!!! I think my biggest fear was that he would not have the will to live but he does, and we are so happy.

I just want everyone to know that we are seeing small miracles happening each day with Devon and we know it is the combined prayers of so many wonderful people who have such great faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in the healing power of the Almighty.

Thank you, Bonnie, Mel & Family

Prayer For Family: 5-7-06

Devon and his immediate family going through an especially difficult time right now. Devon is now aware of the loss of his legs as most of you know. Most of us have no idea how hard this would be. Please continue to pray for them. For Devon, for continued healing of body and spirit. For the family to have the right words, wisdom and the strength to keep going every day.

Update and More From Mel, (Devon's Dad): 5-4-06

As you know from Bonnie's update this has been another day that Devon has had to call on his warrior training work hard again for his body to continue to heal not just through the burns but the surgery also. I need to add that I can testify of a knowledge that it is not Devon doing this by himself or even with the small help that we can give by being by his side. It is because of the outpouring of Love and Prayers from all that are supporting Devon, from his immediate and extended family, to friends, and those that are getting to know Devon through this website that he is continuing to make it through another day.

I am so thankful that our Father in Heaven allowed His Son to Come to Earth, endure the Atonement, and through the Resurrection take not only the sins of the world upon himself, but pain and suffering also. I know we still feel pain, and we suffer, physically and mentally, but never more than we can bear. Because Father knows each of us individually, He has a perfect knowledge of what is bearable for us. The faith, prayers, love and caring for Devon is having a physical impact on him, and we are strengthened also. Charity, the true Love of Christ is being shown not only to Devon and his family, but to all the heroes that have gone before him and are being treated all over this great Country, and also those who are serving, preserving our freedom and way of life.

AMERICANS, as this war gets harder and uglier, will continue to support our warriors and heroes. In response to the letter written requesting that I convey a salute to Devon for him, that I will certainly do, and in response, I salute all of you for your support and patriotism. Thank-you all for your support, Grandma Sylvia and family, your comments were inspired and written with a true personal love and understanding of Devon. To the person that I will call our friend that we have purchased a couple vehicles from, yes it is your place to write to us, we are all gathering strength from each other as we read the inspiring comments.

To my sons who read this, I want the entire country to know how proud of all of you I am, yes, we are focused on Devon right now as he is fighting the battle of his life, I love and have never been more proud of you than I am now as I see you circling around Devon and making sacrifices for him.

Bonnie, you are the Love of my life and there is not another person in this world that I would rather see as I look across Devon's bed than you. You are a MOTHER, a MOM, and my best friend. My eternal gratitude to all again for your help to us and all who are protecting us.....Dad

Update From Devon's Mom: 5-3-06

Devon was taken in to surgery today to remove his gall bladder. It went well and he is resting now. He is doing well as far as all his numbers on the machine show and he responds to us once in awhile. He has been having a lot of flashbacks so they are starting to give him something at night that is suppose to stop them. Monday he is scheduled to have a major skin grafting using his donor sites as well as the skin they have been growing in the lab. All in all he is looking pretty good. His face is healing very well and it looks like he needs a shave soon. :)) We would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and prayers as well as everyone who has donated to Devon's emergency fund. We are overwhelmed with the love that has been shown to our family from friends and even those we have never met from all over the country. The prayers are felt daily by us and we know by Devon, also. Our Heavenly Father truly is watching over Devon and even though he is still considered critical, we feel in our hearts that the Lord will pull him through this. Again, thank you for all your prayers.

Bonnie. Mel & Family

New Update From Devon's Mom: 5-1-06

Devon got through his surgery today. He has some infections in his muscles and they are treating that with powerful antibiotics. They had to replace all his allograph and his skin graft on his chest isn't doing as well as his back, it's only about 50% is taking. He is having a tough time now and I am praying for him to have an uphill turn. It looks like they will take him back to surgery on Wed or Thurs. and do the same thing. His tummy is looking good and the Dr was pleased about that. They told us there would be ups and downs but I really hate the downs. He is aware we are with him off and on and he responds when we talk to him. We know Heavenly Father is watching over him and pray that He will bless and strengthen Devon and guide the Dr & nurses as they care for him.

Bonnie, Mel & Family

Update From David's Mom: 4-30-06

I just left Devon and we really hope everyone will keep up with the intensive prayers. Things are so tough for him right now. He got an infection in his blood and also pneumonia. He is on several antibiotics and has started doing a breathing apnea thing where his breathing stops periodically, so they have the ventilator set to start when he doesn't breathe. He remembers being on fire and I assured him that that was past and he is safe in a hospital in Texas and that we are here with him and will stay with him. He is having a lot of dreams and doing a lot of mumbling. He wakes periodically and recognizes us but then drifts back out. He has another surgery tomorrow and I will let you know how it goes. Please pray that he will have the will to live. It seams as if things have gone downhill since he found out about the amputations. It is really tough to see him struggling with so many things right now. The Dr & nurses are wonderful but I know he is truly in the Lord's hands and if it is His will Devon will pull through and have a great life. Thank you all for your prayers and please keep them up.

Bonnie

NEW UPDATE ON DEVON FROM HIS MOM: 4-28-06

Tuesday night Ryan was visiting Devon about 10:30 and while he was there, Devon raised up his torso and his legs at the same time and saw that his legs had been amputated. How he managed to do that with a broken back and his abdomen held together with Velcro I will never know. He took it pretty hard and Ryan called Mel, who went to the hospital immediately. They talked with him for awhile and stayed until he was asleep. They had to keep him pretty well sedated the next day because he was so agitated but by evening he seemed to be handling it better.

Yesterday he had surgery and it went very well. The Dr said his bowls are doing well but he has a problem with his gall bladder (which will come out eventually). That was good news. He also said his skin graft on his back had taken 75%, which is good, and they were able to do skin grafting on his chest. His next graft will be May 8th when the skin they are growing in the lab will be ready. Devon is so strong but we know that the real healing comes from the Lord. All the prayers are appreciated so much, please continue them, he still is critical and the Dr said that will continue for quite some time. We tell him daily about everyone that is praying for him and sending their love. It brings a slight smile to his face and it brings a feeling of peace to his room. Thank you all so very, very much. It's unbelievable how wonderful it feels to know that so many people love and care for you.

Sincerely,

Bonnie, Mel & Family

About the Attack on Devon's Bradley: From David, His Brother

The situation has definitely hit me hard. Devon always looked up to me as an older brother, and we spent countless hours playing ball, spending time on making him the best at whatever he did. He is so gifted mentally, and physically everything he did always came so easy to him. When Devon called me and told me he was enlisting, I got so excited but my heart dropped at the same time. I know and understand what kind of extreme highs and extreme lows occur to a soldier, and I was unsure if I felt good about Devon taking any part in it. He really wanted it though. He called me so many times asking questions, and wanting to know the ins and outs of the whole situation. It has been difficult for me to accept the fact that what happened actually happened and I was able to find out the actual facts about the attack. There were two Bradley?s, and two up armor HMV?s in the patrol. The IED?s (Improvised Explosive Devices) were buried. There were three IED?s and two went off under his Bradley, one failed to detonate. The Bradley that Devon and four other Brave soldiers were in was extensively destroyed. I marvel the fact that anyone made it out. Which brings me to my other point. Some of Devon?s Brothers in Arms dismounted their Bradley?s and under small arms fire from the ambush that had hit them, they managed to Extract, perform Buddy Aid, and extinguish him. True Heroes. To those who were unable to make it out, my sincere gratitude goes to your families for your service as a soldier and for paying the ultimate price. I salute you.

Devon, I and all of my Brothers here in the Special Forces community think of you and are praying for you daily. The support they show me is incredible; I just wish others could see the support I received when I got news of the incident. It humbles me and I will forever be thankful for the many things that have been done so that I was able to fly to Texas and visit my injured little brother on moments notice.

For all who read this, know that the battle continues on and it will be a long battle. We receive news of fallen comrades almost daily here in our community, and we continue to drive on as any other unit in our determined Armed Forces. Support your troops is not a saying, it is a lifestyle. If you enjoy falling asleep at night knowing that we do not live under a dictator engaged in employing crimes against humanity, or as a repressed people, thank those around you who serve. It means the world to us as soldiers when a sincere face tells us that our service is noticed and we have the support of our fellow Americans. It breaks our hearts when we see and feel the opposite. Devon loves his country and loves being a soldier. Thank you for supporting him and showing my family love in this difficult time.

Update 4-25-06 (Specifics about Devon's Condition, etc.)

Devon was burned over 93% of his body and has had both legs amputated about 3 inches above his knees as well as his right arm a couple inches below the elbow. Physically he continues to amaze the Dr with how he is handling everything and how quickly he heals from each surgery. He has had 6 surgery's so far and this is only the beginning. They estimate 8 months for skin grafting to be complete. They were able to use enough of his own skin to cover his back. He has 3 donor sites that they will be able to use every 10 to 14 days. they have covered the rest of him with cadaver skin but that is only temporary. The only skin that will actually be permanent is his own. On the upside, his face is pretty good, mostly only 2nd% burns and they don't plan to do any grafting on his face, it should heel well. He may need some cosmetic laser surgery eventually for that and his neck but he has his nose, ears, chin, mouth, eyes & eyebrows as well as his hair.

We had to tell him about his hand because they were taking his neck brace off and he would be able to see his arm. He didn't take it well at all and we are waiting to tell his about his legs until he is stronger. He can't lift his head to see them yet. His back is also broken and they will wait until he is out of critical condition to take care of that. He is able to move all his limbs so they don't see any paralysis which means he is a good candidate for prosthetics. Our big concern is his mental state when he finds out about his legs. We can see the Lord helping him every day to overcome each obstacle that comes up and the Dr's are the best in the world. We feel the Lord's sustaining power in our lives and we are so grateful to have the knowledge of the gospel and for the comfort of the Holy Ghost. It is so difficult to see him like that but our prayer is for his heart to be turned to the Savior through all of this and for him to know he can continue to have a wonderful life.

Everyone has been so wonderful and so concerned....He was very alert and interactive this last Saturday and was talking very well. Today he had another surgery and has been sleeping most of the day....
Please continue to pray for Devon, he is still in critical condition and there are many possible complications that may arise.

Update: 4-23-06 Phone Call From Bonnie, (Devon's Mom)

I just talked to Bonnie on the phone and she gave me this update. Devon is talking very well now, (saying several things even with the trach tube still in). The doctors are surprised because it usually does not happen like that. A friend came down to visit him yesterday and he visibly lit up. His surgeries on his stomach seem to be progressing well, and even a bit ahead of the expected schedule. His temperature from the last surgery, (in which they removed some more of his legs) is coming down very well, (another good sign). He is becoming more alert daily, and they are thinking it will need to be soon that they tell him about his missing limbs. Pray for them to have the right words, the wisdom and the strength they will need to do this, and for Devon to accept it as the soldier he is. He has another surgery tomorrow. Let's all trust God for another success, and keep praying for healing, and for his life. He is still in a critical state, and he needs our prayers, (we all know he is getting them). Thanks to all who care so much for Devon. It is being felt by him and his family in very tangible ways, and there are not words to express their gratitude.

Dan Bligh, Devon's Uncle

An update on 4-21-06: From Devon's Dad, Mel

Devon is still listed as critical and will continue to be considered in a critical state for months due to the burns and risk of infection. Devon was in surgery again today, a little more was taken from his legs to enable them to now be in a condition that will allow them to heal for future attachments that he will receive. The initial removal in Germany was done to save his life, knowing more would need to de done later, and that was accomplished today. The Dr. let us know the area of his body that he was able to cover with Devon's donor skin appears to be taking, that is huge news, that will allow other areas to be covered periodically. His temperature went up to 105.2 following surgery today, that is the battle that he is fighting now along with all the others. The medical staff at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) have our COMPLETE confidence and trust. Besides being among the best there is at what they do, they also truly care for and love Devon as evidenced by the tears and prayers that we have shared together.
Bonnie and Ryan are over visiting Devon right now, Jacob and I are spending time together this evening. Devon continues to respond to voices, especially ones that he recognizes, is getting stronger moving his arms and legs. I'll let you all know tomorrow how his temperature is doing. I may be a little premature, but I'm counting two more victories for today, this morning and during surgery, and this afternoon and evening.

Mel

Update from Devon's Dad, (Mel Gibbons): 4-20-06

Devon has almost made it through another day, we go by half days, so each half day is a victory in the many battles that he is facing. There is great determination and strength in Devon, he is doing all the work, has given all that he can, and we completely trust the Lord with what He has in His plan for Devon and all those that know him. We so much feel and appreciate your support, Devon feels the power of the prayers being focused on him also.

Would you please post our address here. We can post cards and letters in the window of his room that he will be able to see when he gets to that point. His sight is OK, he can't lift his head to bring the area into view and we and the medical staff don't want him moving that much anyway if he could. We will write down what the cards and letters say and read them to him. Because of the risk of infection we can't take the cards in.

Update: 4-17-06

Devon has had some more successes. He was taken off the ventilator and his blood oxygen level was better than most peoples with no injuries. He has only 1st degree burns on his face, so there will be no scarring there it seems. His left hand is also in good shape, (and he is left handed). It also seems that the foremost burn specialist in the whole Army was right there close by when Devon was injured, and was able to begin working on him within 20 minutes of the explosion, (coincidence)? He then stayed with Devon on the plane all the way to Germany and is now in Texas working on him. We thank God for that miracle. There is now a huge network of supporters praying for Devon and his family. He is not out of the woods yet the doctors caution. Some of the most dangerous times could be ahead because of the infection. He still in in danger of losing his life, and we still need to pray for his spirit when he finds out about his missing limbs.

Update: 4-16-06

Devon has come through the first surgery of over 6 hours, (started at about 11:20 AM PT). He lost one of his hands today. It was too far gone. He will need around 8 months of surgeries to finish the skin graphs needed. The danger of multiple infections becoming fatal remains, and may even worsen in a month or two. His face seems to be in pretty good shape. He has asked for water , to go home, and about his buddies. Please pray for him and that he will be strong and determined when he does learn about his limbs being gone. Pray for strength for his family as they go through this challenge with him. His brother, (a green beret) knows a guy who lost both legs and runs faster now than he did before. Prosthetic technology is amazing these days. Keep the faith. Pray for God's will in Devon's life. Pray for strength, comfort, and encouragement for his family.
